Welwyn Garden City Local Plan
Welwyn Garden City now faces a pivotal moment in its long planning story. The draft Welwyn Hatfield Local Plan proposes redesignating key Campus West and Oaklands sites from cultural and community use to predominantly residential, a move that many fear could weaken the town’s civic and cultural heart. Housing is clearly needed, but the central question is whether it is being planned in a way that protects the founding “Work, Rest and Play” balance that has long defined the Garden City and underpinned its international planning reputation.
This page summarises the main issues that residents may wish to reflect in their consultation responses. It highlights concerns about the lack of an overarching town‑centre Master Plan, the uncertain future of existing cultural and educational facilities, pressure on already stretched local infrastructure, and the potential loss of heritage, green assets and everyday economic vitality. The aim is not to oppose development in principle, but to argue for change that is properly planned, locally informed and transparently reinvested in the town, while there is still time for residents to influence the outcome.
